Fortunately my parents were not religious and had no intention of pushing me to church or synagogue. My personal beliefs were acquired through my life and I'm comfortable with them. They are non-traditional, to be sure.

Comparing you to the locally developmentally disabled kid was unfair to both you and that child. Shame on your mother for that one. It was poorly done.
