I'm reading a book recommended to me by my friend Susan called "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, Second Edition, How to Edit Yourself Into Print" by Renni Brown. I've got this loaded onto my phone for reading, and Sharon Kay Penman's "Here Be Dragons" loaded onto my Nook. I was reading through the basics on showing instead of telling, character voice and action, etc., and of course I was mentally revising what I have recently written because that's what I do when I read editing books like this.

( to revise or not... )

comments

Finally our heat wave has broken. Last night around 6:30 pm a rainstorm passed through the area and dumped a wonderfully gentle but heavy sunlit rain onto us, dropping our temps from 102F (38.8C) to 88F (31.1C) in a few minutes. Another storm coming through in the early hours of the morning dropped the heat down even more. I can breathe again, I don't feel like a sticky piece of rubber baking on a hot sidewalk, I didn't stick to the sheets while sleeping, I'm SO relieved! This was a miserable stretch of days and we really needed the break. It's only July and we may still get some hot days, but I'm very happy about a weekend that will only have high temps in the 80's instead of the 100's. Yippee!

( pics and relaxed, cool talk below the cut )

comments

Today is Bloomsday. OK, some of you are scratching your heads and maybe even checking your calendars seeing that there is no Bloomsday referenced on the calendar page. But, nonetheless, it is Bloomsday. Bloomsday celebrates the day that the protagonist of James Joyce's "Ulysses" is set. It is also the day when the author, James Joyce, met his future wife Nora Barnacle. Now I don't know if you're a fan of Joyce or even if you have ever read the book "Ulysses", but any good excuse for a party, right? It is celebrated world-wide. So, why not take a bit of time and raise a glass to James Joyce.

( James Joyce and grammar and thoughts on marriage below the cut )

comments

I was determined to knock my "Longest Day" story into shape, after all, it's due on Thursday. But I am addicted to Chef Gordon Ramsey and his two shows that are on now - Hell's Kitchen and Master Chef. They are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday nights and I spend too much time turning around in my chair and watching the action/reaction of these aspiring chefs instead of writing. Add to that the fact that my DH walks down to the computer room to "schmooze" about the shows with me multitudes of times (more than 15 times last night) and it's no wonder that by 9:00 pm I had only managed to do the final edit of pages 1 and 2. Argh!

( Gordon Ramsey and misc below the cut )

comments
