The Olympics are over for another year and a half until we convene in Russia for the Winter Games. Sochi should be quite amazing. The next summer games will be in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Some of you will be relieved that your normal television shows are once again in play, others will miss the daily athletic events that had taken over the airwaves for two weeks. They were memorable in many ways, not just in the gold medals won, but in the athletes who competed.

Congratulations to all of the athletes yesterday. Great Britain won a well-deserved gold in Equestrian. They've been wiping up the field in all of the equestrian events but this one was very special because not only was Germany unable to get the gold, they were actually closed out of the medals completely! Very rare! Gold was also won by the US Women's soccer team, Usain Bolt (amazing speed in an incredible Jamaican sweep of the 200 meter), Ashton Eaton and his teammate won Gold/Silver in decathalon, the women's water polo team from the US won Gold, and Claressa Shields won our first Gold in women's boxing for the US. I caught the first bits of rhythmic gymnastics - so spectacular and beautiful, and of course the finals of women's platform diving - spectacular. What a great day for Olympics!

Obviously time is far more successful on my treadmill of life than I am. I look at the calender and start to panic. I have less than three weeks to get my act together here for Sharon's visit and I am already behind. Now, I'm fully aware that she'll say "Don't worry about it. I'm fine with whatever. I'm there to see you and the State Fair not a clean house." But I would still like my house to be cleaner, I would like me to have another five pounds off, and I would like all of my ducks in a row. Will that happen? Maybe....

So, it is now August and the summer, which seems as if it just started last week, is already into its waning months. Oh, we still have the heat and the humidity, I am still going to have plenty of days when I fall asleep with the fan blowing on me and where I am complaining about the heat, but I am already looking at the various shades of green around me with a nostalgic feeling. Winter has its own beauty, no doubt. There are sparkling mornings after an ice storm that make me catch my breath as the sun hits the angled ice crystals. But, my preference is experiencing the snow rarely and, unfortunately, I live in the wrong state for that.

Two very different voices died on Tuesday and bookshelves will never be quite the same again.

Gore Vidal, author of Lincoln was well known for his acerbic wit. Many newspapers and on-line sites have been listing some of his quotes, so how could I resist joining the tidal wave.

It's been two weeks since my last "normal" day off and I finally get one today. Call me happy! That doesn't mean that I'll be sitting around, I have a long list of things that I need to do, but I'll have a chance to do some laundry and talk with Aearwan late this afternoon - yeah...happy. I have to make serious inroads to cleaning today and I owe Lai some serious beta work, so those two things are my focii today.

Yesterday was a delight for Olympics viewing. I started out seeing individual women's archery and then moved into the Crosscountry Equestrian event from Greenwich Park. That was so beautiful, and it took until close to noon to get through all 74 riders so I had a chance to drop back now and again and see more of the rides. Such beautiful horses. Now, at 4:30 am, the Precision Jumping has started. This will go much faster since the course will take less than two minutes to jump. The horses are beautiful, the riders are planted onto their equine partners. I guess it doesn't take a lot to make me happy...this does :-)

The cross-country jumping event was absolutely fun to watch. Mesmerizing!

My AinA is complete, posted, and done. I never would have succeeded without the incredible assistance of Keiliss who generously beta read my monster twice! The final word count was extreme - more than 15,000 in nine chapters. This was certainly NOT what I had intended when I accepted the assignment in May, but as the story unwound, there wasn't any other way it could go. I just wrote the words, the story was already there just waiting for me to grasp it. I'm relieved that it is over, though. Now maybe I can work on some smaller writing projects until NaNo comes along.

OK, let's start with the Olympics because I have the road race on behind me as I write this. The opening ceremonies last night were very fun. As some of my friends have mentioned, it was reminiscent of the "Scouring of the Shire" - the overthrow of a "peaceful and happy" agrarian society to one of the Industrial Revolution. Of course, mentions of famine, Lords and serfs, and land entitlement weren't mentioned at all. So, the Industrial Revolution takes over and then we pass on to a major segment celebrating the wonders of Britain's health care system. I'm envious of some parts of the system, but have enough friends who have had difficulties with getting adequate and timely care through the National Healthcare System that I am a bit skeptical. It was fun though. Mary Poppins was fun, the Queen and James Bond parachuting into the stadium was marvelous, and the way that the torch was lit - yeah. Those were all good. In the main, I enjoyed spending several hours watching the opening ceremonies.

So I submitted my MPTT Anniversary story last night, less than 1000 words, but I'm happy with it. I revisited a side character of one of my longer words and liked this small glimpse she allowed me into her life. I still have 1/3 of my AinA to work through in a final edit, although I know I'll be tempted to run through it one final time. I like the editing process, even though sometimes it seems that I am running through the same ruts and just digging them deeper. But I always find something else to fine-tune, it's one step at a time and eventually things do get done. I envy people who can sit down and write something that will need minor tweaking at the end of their first session. My pieces are not like that. I always need fairly major work after the first write, and that gets followed by several more run-through edits, fine-tuning more and more each time.

Writing from the soul is writing in blood and editing can be...challenging.

Even though we have been watching (on and off) Olympic soccer for the past two days, today marks the official start to the 2012 Summer Olympics from London with the Opening Ceremonies tonight. The ceremony will start at 6:00 pm tonight (my time zone). Unfortunately, I work until 6:00 pm and usually don't get home until 6:30-6:45, so I'll move through closing at record speed and hope I don't miss too much. I already have dinner finished and waiting for me in the freezer, so I can munch and watch at the same time.

Minnesota is generally a rather temperate climate, although it is humid in the summers. But we don't often have days-on-end in the upper comfort zones without relief. We're in the middle of a heat wave right now and uncomfortable is such a poor description of how we are all feeling. Actually, I could take out my broad brush and paint the entire US with it. We are hot. We are uncomfortable. We are packing the swimming pools and backwoods ponds, we are crowded into venues offering air conditioning such as movie theatres and restaurants. We are turning on the fans and air conditioners in our homes. And we are blowing power out in massive numbers from all of this overuse of electric power in a heat wave.
