I don't see them as vampires or hilbillies or zombies. I see them as Old Ones - those who wandered the Earth before us and live hidden from us now - in those dead places, the high areas, the secret valleys and dark delvings. Are they human? Maybe......or maybe not. I do see them as bipedal if that helps - LOL.
I see rolling hills with verdant vegetation and some sharp cliffs. I think the Virginia, Kentucky area (not that I've ever been there, but it just seemed like the right geography).
I do feel that this is a contemporary story - happening today, or at least within the past year.
