It's the 27th of September, only a few days left in this transitive month. It starts out with heat and the State Fair - crowds, food on a stick, and my BFF Sharon visiting for another year, and ends up with cooler days, sometimes clouds and rain, and even a snowflake or two. But not this year!

Twig the Fairy has been a staple at Ren Fest for several years. She
plays the pipes instead of speaking and has never been known to speak
a word. Children love her and she's really very charming.

Admittedly, last weekend was cold. At Ren Fest over the weekend we were wrapped up in our cloaks and seeking out patches of sun every time we could. But it warmed into the low 60's and the day itself was beautiful - clear blue skies and just a light breeze.

Happy Bastille Day to my friends in France (and anyone else who loves the culture and La Marseillaise). I remember Bastille Day with great fondness from one special year of my childhood. As I grew up, my parents and I spent our summers in Aspen, attending concerts at the Aspen Music Festival and living in that wonderful valley surrounded by my favorite mountains. The Music Festival was (and still is) world-renowned and celebrated and they invited a variety of artists to be artists in residence at the Festival. This particular year they invited a composer, Darius Milhaud, to be the artist in residence. I wasn't fond of his compositions, although I have come to enjoy them as I grew older, but at that time I was a Beethoven addict and nothing lived up to the high mountain of Ludwig Van.

Today is the first day of the three days of Lemuria. General searching for Lemuria usually brings up the mythical land that sank below the oceans, similar in basic scope to the Atlantis myth. But the Romans celebrated Lemuria on May 9, 11 and 13. Yes - three non-contiguous days. How unusual. But the entire holiday is unusual.

So, this is my 1000th post in this blog and looking at that I'm pretty amazed. As a child I bought diary after diary, all of which languished on a shelf with only a few pages filled in. I just couldn't stick with a journal. But I love keyboarding, so combining a keyboard with a virtual diary was a perfect solution. I now find I can keep a diary of a sort. Generally I speak out six days a week unless I am on vacation or at a conference. I do it for me, but actually get read by others which thrills me because, as human beings, we all want to reach out to each other. I can hardly wait to find out what the next 1000 posts will consist of.

(Just to clarify - it is not my 1000th post to LJ or DW, but I copy my daily blog over to those two boards daily since I have started active membership on those forums.)

Yesterday I spoke about the poor groundhog, destined to be pulled from his comfortable burrow to view whether or not he sees his shadow, and thus predict the remainder of the winter. The poor thing. You would think that if the people can see their shadows, then so could the furry, sharp-toothed beastie :-)

So, I have to wish a Happy Hanukkah to those of my friends who walk that Path. When I was young, we would all go over to Tante Gerty's home and light the menorah. I gather, from other blogs, that it is not called a menorah any more, but old habits of more than 40 years die hard. I don't think I'll be changing this. I have two menorahs that I brought back after Mom died, along with her mezuzzah which I have by my door. I may not light the candles any more, but I am still a spiritual person, just walking a parallel pathway.

So yesterday was Samhain (and thank you to the many friends who sent me greetings for the holiday). Today is the beginning of Dia de los Muertos.

Today is All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween. The East Coast has gotten buried by an unseasonal snow storm (so happy that it is over there instead of here in the Midwest) and some towns are postponing Halloweed celebrations until Friday! Wow. I can visualize some very cold covens celebrating in the woods tonight.

Malcom Potek is my hero.  He didn't rescue me from a burning building, and he didn't save my financial ass by pulling my assets from a crooked money manager; he offered me the use of a piece of equipment that I needed at a reasonable price and with a schedule that works with mine.

Why is he my hero? Read below the cut... )
This fused glass piece is by Charlotte Behrens and is called
Amber Dreams.  I looked for work by Malcom, but couldn't
find any good pics of his pieces.

Malcom is a glass worker.  I grew to know him many years ago - at least 20 years ago, when his mother brought some exquisite black ash baskets in to my store for me to look at and possibly purchase.  I have one of them next to my fireplace to this day - they were really stunning.  I really enjoyed getting to know Nancy over the years, and when I met Malcom, we hit it off.  He creates wonderful fused glasswork and has a studio in Minneapolis where he teaches lampworking classes and rents hot torch and cold forming time.  When I have customers interested in learning how to work with glass, I always refer them to him because he knows what he's doing.  He's talented, and he's been making his living with his glasswork for many years now.

The Taurus ring saw could make my wish list, if I could
find a used one at a reasonable price.

I needed access to a ring saw.  A ring saw cuts glass, and I have some larger and some additional shapes that need to be cut from the glass I fused last week.  I spent most of my Wednesday cutting four smaller pieces by hand, and I didn't want to even think about trying to do that for the larger and more complex pieces.  I've used a ring saw before and I knew it could do what I wanted with a minimum of fuss and time.  The problem is, they cost $350 and that's WAY more money than I have or can spend.  So I Emailed Malcom to find out if he had one for rent and he does; $25 for an hour of cold studio time.  I'm deliriously happy.  I'll bring my glass there in two weeks and cut out all of the shapes that I need, then I can take them back home to flash fire them.  I need to work this project carefully, mistakes can't be redone so each step needs to be carefully thought out before I begin the beading.  The beadwork, at least, will be easier :-)
