I have always claimed to be so blessed by the friends I have made in my life. Some of them are only friends for a short time - a year or two - and then they wander away for a variety of reasons. They always leave me richer for having known them and whether we part in friendship or anger, I'm still grateful for their influences while we were friends. Why speak of this today? Because I received the most amazing and unexpected gift from a friend in Germany who I've never met except on-line and I had to share my good fortune.

A network of friends can make life so interesting and fun!

Take a look at my marvelous gift and why I love routine... )

So the Chex Mix is made (and happily being eaten), the prime rib is in the refrigerator awaiting cooking for Christmas Day, I'm picking up our ham this morning and DH bought his spritz cookies last night. Solstice has now arrived, the fires have been rekindled and the sun is beginning the return voyage to the heat of the summer. The lean season is beginning, but it is starting with a feast of friends, food and festivity. To honor my friends and to celebrate the Solstice, I have sunrise pictures to share with all of you today. Thank you for enriching and enlightening my life over the past year. I look forward to sharing the next with all of you.

There are a lot of you who were in the path of Hurricane Sandy yesterday. If you have power and if you possibly can, please check in here to let us know that you and your families are all right.

Underneath those clouds is the East Coast of the US.

The power of this storm was phenomenal and wide-spread destruction ensued. The subway system under the East River is flooded and shut down for at least several days. Ocean City, a favorite place for Dawn Felegund, was badly flooded and is still flooded. The hurricane came to land around Atlantic City, New Jersey and conditions were so bad that some of the rescue shelters were flooded, requiring a second rescue for some of the residents.
this is not a long post, but there are a couple of additional pics so I put things under a cut as a courtesy )

My goodness, what heat! The temperature is hot, people's tempers are equally hot, and I'm just one of many getting burned. It's unpleasant. As usual, I need to really understand that internet friends are just that - not real life friends, not friends with whom I have invested a lot of time and effort getting to know, not people that I always have a great deal in common with. It is unfortunate, however, when friendships crash and burn. I had one "friend" leave me in a huff yesterday and just had to shake my head. I was unfriended by her because I supported the privacy of another "friend". Ugh! It was ugly and so very unnecessary. But life goes on.

what to do when it's hot? )

So, it took almost three hours to get the budget together and what I got from my DH was an argument about the numbers. Well, the numbers are from the payments made and don't lie. I only have two years for comparison - next year will be better - but the reality is the amount I am given to operate the household is almost 40% too low. Basically, NOT a good situation. But I'll fight the dollar war one battle at a time, and eventually I'll win the war through catapult damage to the castle walls.

Yesterday was horribly busy, but I felt pretty accomplished by the end of the day. The only frustrating part of the day was towards the end of my weekly phone conversation with my friend Aearwen when her phone suddenly cut off. Maybe it was Spirit telling me that I'd been on the phone long enough, but suddenly it was dead air. I phoned her back and left a message on her machine, we'll figure it out eventually, but it was probably time for us to stop chatting anyway. It's amazing how fast the time goes when I'm talking with her :-)

Assignments - So DH says to me last night as I was looking carefully through Spectrum 18 (one of my happy things to do - LOL) that he wants assignments. "Assignments?" I query in return. "What do you mean? Do you want prompts for writing, a goal for artwork, a media in which to produce something, a deadline to meet? What kind of assignments?" "Yes" was his response - LOL.

Yesterday was one of those two steps forward and one step back kind of days. I got most of my errands completed in the morning, then went home and finished my SV piece. That's done and ready to send on now. It's not too bad :-)

So, my auto repair people are pretty amazing. My DH did a total number on our car - after cleaning the throttle cable, draining the overage of gas from the engine, replacing the gaskets and spark plugs, and changing the oil (along with other things that were affected by DH's inability to start his car properly) we walked out of the repair shop much poorer. Ouch! I need to make an appointment for my own car to get a 100,000 mile checkover in February, I'm going to begin to feel as if I'm supporting these guys singlehandedly.

So, my nose is no longer running like a faucet, more like a slow drip.  But my cough won't leave, so I suppose I get to have a soft cough for a while.

We finally got the second quotation from an electrician for my Father-by-Marriage's home.  There is a $3000 differential between the two quotations, and we aren't seeing enough in the higher quote to justify the additional $3000, so even though we know additional work will probably have to be done on the lower quote and that it will come in higher than the actual number currently listed.  But either way, the work will be done soon and competently, and we will have one less thing to worry about with my FbM.  At this point, I'll take anything I can get to lower the stress level.

Thanks to all of you who commiserated with me when I was feeling so horrid yesterday.  I was asleep by 8:30 pm last night and feel much better today.  I'll still dress warmly today, I am a believer in sweating illness out and I get cold too easily when I'm not feeling well.  My on-line friends mean a great deal to me and your wishes helped me a lot.
