So Lance Armstrong decided to end his constant fight against the doping charges that have been laid against him for most of his professional career. In doing so he is relinquishing his seven victories at Le Tour de France and focusing on the things that he says are most important to him - his family and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I am a bit disappointed with him for stepping back and saying "enough," but I understand it as well. There comes a time when you have to turtle. You have to pull inside your shell and protect yourself because leaving yourself outside will lead to so much bloodletting that you will die by those small arrows. Even arrows shot by faerie bows can harm in the aggregate so allowing protection is not a poor decision. In spite of everything, Lance is my man. He won Le Tour seven times and no-one else has come close. He might be an idiot many times, and maybe not the brightest bulb, but I still think he deserves his well-earned titles.

I had all of the best intentions for today...awaken at my usual time, run for a little while, settle down at the computer and answer my Emails and write my blog. Standard schedule. But...as you may (or may not) recall, I went to see "Brave" with Chickie last night. We had a great time at the movie, enjoyed it very much, although I'm not sure if I'll be purchasing this DVD for the future. I may just RedBox it for DH to look at later on. It was very enjoyable and worth staying through the credits to get the very last scene before the screen went black. But...

Many, many months ago.... OK, a few months ago... Anyway, at one time I accepted the challenge to write a story for an unknown person for the Ardor in August writing challenge. That person has since become an on-line follower and I have been hip-deep in my work for her. She requested a standard pairing, and my challenge was to figure out a twist that would bring a different perspective to this relationship.

So, I've been trying to be good to myself and treadmill every day again. I'll try to make it a habit, which I know from studies means to do it for at least 30 days to make it ingrained. I have been doing a quick run when I wake at 3:30 am, but today I'm pushing things off until I return home around 10 am instead so that I can take a bit longer and not feel as rushed. Then I'll settle down to continuing edits on my AinA (and reading the crits that Keiless gave me as Beta yesterday) and working on a beta for Lai. It's very much looking like this will be a sit on my behind day, and that's why I want to take a bit longer run before I become sedentary.

Finally our heat wave has broken. Last night around 6:30 pm a rainstorm passed through the area and dumped a wonderfully gentle but heavy sunlit rain onto us, dropping our temps from 102F (38.8C) to 88F (31.1C) in a few minutes. Another storm coming through in the early hours of the morning dropped the heat down even more. I can breathe again, I don't feel like a sticky piece of rubber baking on a hot sidewalk, I didn't stick to the sheets while sleeping, I'm SO relieved! This was a miserable stretch of days and we really needed the break. It's only July and we may still get some hot days, but I'm very happy about a weekend that will only have high temps in the 80's instead of the 100's. Yippee!

Minnesota is generally a rather temperate climate, although it is humid in the summers. But we don't often have days-on-end in the upper comfort zones without relief. We're in the middle of a heat wave right now and uncomfortable is such a poor description of how we are all feeling. Actually, I could take out my broad brush and paint the entire US with it. We are hot. We are uncomfortable. We are packing the swimming pools and backwoods ponds, we are crowded into venues offering air conditioning such as movie theatres and restaurants. We are turning on the fans and air conditioners in our homes. And we are blowing power out in massive numbers from all of this overuse of electric power in a heat wave.

So after watching the conclusion of Le Tour de France (congrats to Cadel Evans, Andy and Frank Schleck, Mark Cavendish, Sammy Sanchez, Phillipe Roland, and Team Garmin-Cervelo).  What an amazing Tour they did this year.  Beautifully constructed, highly contested.  I loved every day of the ride and my week will seem rather empty having the radio back on at the shop and only baseball as alternative viewing to the stock market on our daytime TV.

Even the lion is smiling - Cadel Evans in yellow!

After the Tour, we dressed and went to the old house to mow the lawn, clip back some bushes, and clean out the gutters.  We used my ladder - the one that DH had always said cost me too much.  But it is an excellent ladder and came through in the crunch with everything we needed.  We dropped by Dairy Queen on the way home for small ice cream cones and then went home.  Looking at the trees around our driveway when we got home, we started working with the chain saw and DH's ladder (not nearly as good as mine is) to get at least one tree pulled down.  Success!  One tree down and several still remaining.  But at least we are one step closer.  It was a ton of work, but worth it.  Subway for dinner and I was able to bury my nose in my Nook for a couple of hours before calling it a night.  I feel quite accomplished today - LOL.

So I belong to this great writers board, a group of slightly less than 100 of us in the Tolkien fanfic realm who read and critique each other's works before we release them to the wider reading world.  And I love my writers group - I truly don't know what I would do without them.

The current story I'm working on which is due on Monday is one of those times.  I can't post it for critique because one of my best friends on the crit board is also a moderator of this particular monthly contest.  Usually my DH looks at my work and scratches his head - it makes no sense to him because he doesn't understand the framework that I used for the background history.  But this latest story has piqued his imagination and he volunteered to beta the piece for me.  I haven't looked through what he did yet, but he did spend a good amount of time on it and he wants to take my idea and rewrite it in his own words also.  I'll take a look through his suggestions/corrections this morning, apply many of them and ignore a few others, and I'll submit the story on time.  I won't do this very often, though.  All I got from him was "I wouldn't do it this way..." stuff.  When I beta I am very careful to allow the author's voice to come through.  I'm not so sure he is doing that, so I'll have to be careful that my voice still rings out through the story.

And Vive Le Tour de France!  What a race it has been.  It will all end tomorrow on the streets of Paris, but I've been glued to the TV every day watching everything I could.  Congratulations to Tommy Voeckler, Frank and Andy Schleck, and Cadel Evans.  You've made this year's race outstanding!

Every so often I fall across a piece of music that is perfect for a particular story or character.  Last night I heard EMI 64123, a six-disc compilation of the violin works of Michael Rabin, a prodigy who died when he was 36 years old.  He was playing Niccolo Paganini's Violin Concerto #1.  It wasn't the composition as much as the delivery that reminded me of Richard St Vier.  And all I could see while listening to this was the incomparable swordsman practicing in the old rooms in Riverside with Alec reading in a corner.  The economy of movement, the precision of each stroke were played through the music.  If you love Swordspoint and love Richard St Vier, you might want to consider listening to Michael Rabin's interpretation of Paganini - it's brilliant!
