We've been experiencing an unusual January warm stretch, but that came to an end last night and we're back in the deep freeze starting today. The thing that will make for an interesting day is that it was raining for the past day - yes, raining in the middle of winter in Minnesota. That means that everything will have frozen overnight, and although I doubt I'll have anything this pretty to look at, walking might be very challenging for a while until salt gets laid down. I thought I'd share four very lovely photographs of winter ice for today.

These berries frozen in a casing of ice are just a stunning
reminder of the beauty that can be found in these low temperatures.

A friend posted these shoes yesterday and they totally took over my thoughts. I fell in love. I fell in love enough that I bought a pair of high-top Converse shoes from Zappo and they are on their way to me. Yesterday afternoon was spent with small, stolen moments at my computer researching a variety of paints and techniques for painting on canvas shoes. I'm torn between using the air brush or a hand-held brush, but I think I know what paints I want to use. Yeah! I'm gonna paint myself some shoes - LOL.

I don't know who originally painted these, but I want a pair for
myself. So...shoes ordered, air brush ready, now to decide exactly
what images I want...

So, it is now August and the summer, which seems as if it just started last week, is already into its waning months. Oh, we still have the heat and the humidity, I am still going to have plenty of days when I fall asleep with the fan blowing on me and where I am complaining about the heat, but I am already looking at the various shades of green around me with a nostalgic feeling. Winter has its own beauty, no doubt. There are sparkling mornings after an ice storm that make me catch my breath as the sun hits the angled ice crystals. But, my preference is experiencing the snow rarely and, unfortunately, I live in the wrong state for that.

So, we're finally going to get some snow. All of the earlier storms that were forecast missed us. We got a little bit of snow here and there, but it was the nicest winter in many long year. However, that's going to be changing, starting today and extending through early evening tomorrow. Now we're going to be dumped on - anywhere from 6-12 inches in 24+ hours. Not nearly as bad as our huge snowstorm starting off last winter's many storms, but a very respectable amount that will make driving hazardous, getting in and out of my parking lot challenging, and will keep me home for most of my day off tomorrow (just most - not all - LOL). Here's a lovely winter scene for you to look at. My surroundings won't look this good until at least Thursday or Friday :-)

Ouch! I knew my car would be expensive, after all, she's almost at 100,000 miles and I wanted to get a thorough breakdown, repair and refit done so that she would be good for another 50,000-100,000 miles (with regular upkeep). But what I had hoped would be only $1100 turned into $1700. I'll be paying for this for the rest of the year *sigh*. I get a small monthly amount from my Mom's estate which has to spread pretty far, and even though I can handle emergency expenses like this, it's never easy. But I now have a car with safe tires, safe brakes, a new water pump, new belts, hoses and seals, and hopefully the last of the big repair bills for several years.

I always feel a bit sorry for the poor groundhog. It is happily ensconsed in his den hibernating the winter away and here come people grasping it around the middle, pulling it out of the warm and cozy den, and subjecting it to lights and sounds unlike anything in the normal life of a groundhog. It is no wonder that they never look very happy, indeed, three years ago one bit the person handling it, biting off the tip of a finger. Go groundhog!

Today, the 13th of January, is traditionally known as Midwinter. It is supposedly the longest and coldest day of winter and winter's half-way point. Early Pagans took atock of their food stores around this time to determine their ability to survive the second half of the winter. If there was enough of a surplus, they would brew beer with the extra grain and mead with any extra honey, causing this to also be known as the Festival of Brewing (Irish).

We are expected to get our first snow today, and I am SO not ready. I don't want to replace the snow shovel and sweepers into my car again. I don't want to face pulling snow off the roof for another winter. Can I move to a nice warm climate for the winter? No...I'll diminish and return to my life and remain Sandra.....(with apologies to Tolkien for the paraphrasing).

Even though George RR Martin's "Game of Thrones" books are peppered with the phrase "winter is coming", it really is coming here in Minnesota. The temps will drop quite a bit tomorrow and we should see some snow here in the Twin Cities by the weekend.
