My office computers, the ones that operate my inventory, sales reports, and actual sales, are old. I know they are old, the world knows they are old. I've cobbled together newer monitors, and we've burned out several mice, but the sales program that I operate was designed to work with Win 98 and I have to keep computers operating that system available for it. To upgrade to a new computer sales system, from the same developers, would cost $12,000 (not including the actual computers - just the program) and we would have to re-enter each inventory item BY HAND because there is no way to import the items from our older system into the newer one. I have more than 30,000 individual inventory items that would have to be rekeyed. Do you start to understand why I try to baby my old computers along so many years after they should have been in the junkheap?

I need the computer operational, not just a pile of junk. Read on... )

This evening we celebrate Litha, the mid-summer Solstice, and it feels like summer with a heat wave throughout the US today. People are flocking to the beach and lakes, air conditioners are running causing selective power brown outs, and movie theatres and shopping centers are crowded with people escaping the heat. It's not too bad here, but it is hot and since today is my day off, I'll be without any air conditioning for the day. Maybe I'll lose some weight through sweating? I wish all of you a fulfilling next six months of life, love and creativity while I cherish Litha in my heart today.

Today is my "day off" and the list of things I have to accomplish today is longer than my height (relatively speaking). Oy! I have to call the accountant and get appointments set for the company and the personal income taxes to be prepped. I have to go to two different banks - one just for a deposit, the other to return and re-order checks that were printed incorrectly (sigh). I have to go to the art supply store (this one is at least a fun errand) and get the brush pens I promised to buy for my DH. I have to go grocery shopping, I have at least two loads of laundry to do, I also need to get a mail order into the mail.

My DH normally is not fond of my taking on additional crafts. He admitted the other day, however, that he isn't minding the fact that I am writing now, even though it is taking a great chunk of my time. He said "at least writing is cheap".

So I picked up DH's new computer yesterday. I had it set up by 8:30 am and started working on getting his programs installed properly. It runs Win 7, so is more up-to-date than any of our other computers.

Today is a busy one, and I needed some good sleep. So I took two heavy-duty pain pills last night to make it through the night. Why pain pills for bronchitis? Because my coughs have managed to tear the muscles of my chest and it HURTS! Big time hurts.

So, yesterday I wrote about my DH's computer woes. I brought the CPU to my computer guru and we looked it over, discussed things, and agreed that it was probably the mother board - non-repairable. Our computers are old and long in the tooth, so it's not a surprise.

DH got a new graphic board put in back in March. It's dying, so I have a phone call in to my Computer Guru to find out when I can drop the CPU by for a fix.

So, I had hopes, slim but hopes nonetheless, that my friend who had tossed me out of her life while I was suffering with my root canal issues would realize that we had been friends for longer than I had been her client, and that we would manage to put all of this behind us.  I wanted to continue our friendship, although I have no intention of having her as my accountant any more.

One of the monitors at the shop has been dying for the past few weeks.  It starts the day out well, but by the end of the day the monitor screen has begun to shrink, making it difficult to turn the system off since it is shrinking the bottom control bar.  So I purchased a monitor yesterday and today (or Friday) I get the dubious joy of installing.  That means that Computer #1 will get a new monitor.  Computer #2 will get the monitor that had been on Computer #1, and the old Computer #2 monitor will have to be recycled.  It wouldn't be bad if there wasn't a crapload of stuff piled in front of the CPU for Computer #1.  My partner just can't seem to avoid piling things onto any horizontal surface.  Computer #2 will be easier to get to, but the cables have to snake through some tight holes.  I'm not sure I'm up for this today.  I probably would rather just be reading "Fall of Kings", the last book in the Swordspoint saga.  Have a wonderful Thursday.

Thank goodness for a great computer guru.  My guru phoned me at 6:30 am and I had the CPU to him by shortly after 7 am.  He worked on it until a little after 8 am, replacing the graphics card with a much better one, and I had the CPU back home and hooked up by 9 am.  I was even at the shop on time.  Call me happy.

Judith Klinghorn will be among the artists exhibiting
at the ACC Show this weekend.

This weekend is the American Craft Council show in downtown Saint Paul.  It's an event that I always attend, I have been going to it for more than 10 years.  I have no money to spend, but I love looking at the pretty things and watching whatever demonstrations they may have going on.  There are often a few customers of mine who exibit there, and some friends as well, so it's a pleasant few hours of wandering looking at beauty and dreaming of possibilities.

Caribou Coffee shops have large, comfortable chairs,
fireplaces for the winter months, and great coffee.

And I'm so nose-deep in Swordspoint.  I'm looking forward to when I leave for work today, because I'll either grab breakfast or coffee with oatmeal at Caribou and read for an hour.  Just call me happy (at least for the time being).  Oh, and artist signups for the Tolkien Big Bang event are early next week, so I'll be sure to sign up for that also.  It will at least get me back to my sketchbook.  Have a creative weekend.

My DH managed to do a serious crash to his computer yesterday afternoon. At least one of his graphics cards is fried, the keyboard and mouse are completely non-responsive, and windows won't boot properly.

I am nose-deep in Ellen Kushner's novel "Swordspoint". I usually wait to see what gets recommended to me over time and I had at least five different friends highly recommend this book to me. So I bought it for my NookColor and am totally entrapped and entranced. I have other books on my wait list - cash is very tight right now so I couldn't indulge heavily. But I guess I'll have things to look forward to :-) Have a creative day. Allow yourself to curl up in a chair with a cup of coffee or tea and read at least a chapter in a good book. It's well worth the time.
