I am finally catching up with hundreds of Emails and misc questions that I let lie while on my Labor Day vacation. But I have three stories to write and I'm not able to get back into a writing groove yet. I had to return most of my interlibrary loaned research materials for my NaNoWriMo book yesterday, although I still have one for another week, and I have deadlines breathing down my neck. But what do I do? I read. I'm hip deep in a book series on my Nook and re-reading a book on my new phone (reading it for the third time). Having the ability to read any of my NookBooks on my phone is probably not one of the best things - LOL. But it is one thing that is making me love my phone even more. I haven't figured out a comfortable way to write on my phone yet, and the screen is smaller than that of my Nook, but the darned phone is incredibly versatile. *sigh* It's worming its way into my heart.

It's Wednesday my "day off" and I have a list that will take me all over town, cost me lots of $ and keep me running all day long. I will be driving all over town, clipping rogue trees at the small house, buying all of my extra Renaissance Fest tickets for Chickie and Sharon (we all go out for one day together) and my less expensive pre-purchased admission tickets and Cheap-skate books for the State Fair. I need to make a doctor appointment for my DH, get some measurements on my eyes so that I can order new lenses for my eyeglasses, and call my accountant to make sure that an extension was filed for a tax return. I also want to drop by my broker's office (I've never visited there) to find out why I can't order checks for my savings/checking account and get some extra dollars transferred in. I need to renew my DH's car license and make an ear doctor appointment for him. And I have to continue cleaning my house - only fifteen days left until Sharon arrives and I want my house cleaned up. Whew!!! Too much to do!

What am I reading? I'm totally involved in....the circus! More below the cut )

In the introduction to The Age of Fable, Bulfinch wrote: "Mythology is the handmaid of literature; and literature is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of happiness."

I have advocated that reading equates to happiness for most of my life, at least since I was able to read. In the days of my youth, I always had a book in my hand. When my sight got worse, I just held the books closer, but they never went away. I had Lasik surgery in 2002 or 2003 (no, I don't remember the exact year...) and suddenly my eyes were better...and worse. For several years I had serious problems reading physical books for any length of time and I was devastated. That's when I discovered audio books and I listened to those for several years. But I missed physical books that weren't non-fiction. I missed my dragons and magic and swords.

One of the things that brings me joy is reading. What! A writer reading? What would I be doing with something so silly and so non-physical as an activity in my life? But reading, the movement of recognized symbols into words and mental imagery when seen through the eyes (or fingertips in the case of braille), is central to my existence and happiness. It makes me think about those societies that don't have a written language or those people who either cannot or are not allowed to read.

Several years ago I was searching out a nice, neighborhood Italian restaurant that served true rigatoni noodles, not penne pasta. I remembered one that had catered my niece's wedding, one where she used to work when she still lived in the old neighborhood, dropped by to try a meal, and was hooked. So from that time, for the past several years, I have been dropping by on my way home from work on Saturday nights and ordering take-out for dinner. As is the case with many small businesses in today's economy, they were impacted. But not in a good way. Restaurants have had a tough go of it, and many have closed their doors, but Bascali's forged ahead. Unfortunately the economy finally caught up with them, and today is their final day of business. I'll pick up a final take-out order tonight, and we'll find another place for our weekly no-cook treat, but I always mourn a bit when a small, independent business ends. I think it leaves all of us a bit poorer and a bit more pushed into large, uncomfortable boxes of same-ness.

I'll miss you, Bascali's.

I got LASIK in my right eye in 2001 and my final follow-up appointment for that was in 2002. But since then I haven't had my eyes examined. For several years I found reading to be very difficult and worked with audio books instead of written ones, but when I got my bifocals I read more, and when I got my NookColor I was back to my normal voracious reading habits. I'm very pleased about that. But as I increased my reading, my prescription for my glasses got more and more out of date. I've needed new glasses for quite a while and finally broke down and set up an appointment with my eye doctor for an exam. I have that today and I can start getting my glasses relensed with a new prescription soon. That will make me very happy! My eyeglass frames are unique and custom made, so I don't replace the glasses completely, rather I get new lenses for my frames instead.

Today is my final day of cat feeding/sitting, my friend returns home this afternoon and her cat will be happy again. I won't see my friend until Saturday when she returns to work, but I will be able to shred the "Kitty Care" schedule tonight.

I had a wonderful two days off. I read a lot, I wrote a little (probably should have done more of this, but that's how it happened to go) ate good food, and watched DVD's. Today will be cool again, so I will be comfortable at the shop today instead of wilting from the heat, and I need to start thinking seriously now about my trip to the Bead & Button Show next week because I leave in a week and have to be packed and ready to go.

As usual, I get involved in things. Although I am still revising my own B2ME items so that I can post them at my archives, and still doing beta work for Lai, I am also trying to brew potions and cast spells in Pottermore. I am reading through the seven Harry Potter novels on my NookColor right now, and am reading the two remaining books in my "dialect can carry a story" recommendations. In other words, I'm busy (good).

I am now the proud possessor of a library card. OK, I know - I read like a maniac, I write, I do research, why haven't I had a library card before now? Well, I have and I haven't. Throughout my life I have had either library cards for my local libraries or was a student accessing the student libraries of the various colleges I attended. The Denver Public Library was my friend, especially when I was researching various presentations that I made on World War II. The librarians were great and the collection was deep, they also had a 2nd floor room with typewriters (yes, this was in the dark ages before computers) where I could put quarters into a timed meter and type up my notes. Much easier, and it meant I didn't need to check out a bunch of books, drive them 90 minutes north of the City to the town where I attended college, and then have to return them back to Denver before their due dates. A pain, so the typewriters were a god-send.

I'll start today by wishing Albert Einstein a very happy birthday. Just think of where we would be today without his revolutionary Theory of Relativity. Now, I know I share this list with a lot of VERY intelligent people, and I also know that I am average, so if I say things wrong, please forgive me. But I think that E=MCª is pretty kewl. The fact that something that deep that explains so much can be expressed so beautifully and, thus, penetrate the general mindview of the populace is nothing short of amazing. So here's to you, Einstein. Great tag line! Great idea! And, BTW, thanks for helping my Uncle gain admittance to the US. It was a great thing and your letters of recommendation opened the immigration door for him.

So, on February 23, 1455 (yes, that's 1455) the first printing of the Guttenburg Bible began in Mainz, Germany. The invention of the Guttenburg press and the inks needed to allow multiple copies of the written word revolutionized the dissemination of information and distribution of knowledge. It is generally considered to be a contributing factor to the Age of Enlightenment, etc, and just look at how far we have come.

Once again I am missing Tucson. Why, you may ask, do I care about Tucson and what brings me to state this in my daily blog? Well, right now Tucson is the heart of the gem and bead-buying nation with the Tucson Gem Show going on now and most of the bead shows scheduled for this coming weekend. Fortunately I still have gemstone material from my last major trip that I can work with in my own work, but it was always a nice break from winter, to head down to the (relative) warmth of Arizona, look at amazing rock, gems and beads, and catch up with friends.

I usually don't care about what day it is, but Monday was a ton of work and I was just exhausted by the end of it, leaving my temper tied by a hairstring. So when my DH came down at 9pm and my most recent story was refusing to post properly, I was LESS than happy, leading to unhappy people and a DH who dropped the D from his designation for the remainder of the day. He usually will sulk for a few days, so I can make an expectation that he will be pissy about my poor mood for most of the remainder of the week *sigh*.

I was very busy yesterday, and still didn't get to Target to buy Harry Potter Deathly Hallows part 2. Hopefully tomorrow after we are done raking leaves we'll drop by and pick it up then. I'm sure I'll want to do something other than deal with the blisters I'll be bound to have.

I don't want to go to work today. I'm involved in trying to wrap up my "Feast" story which finally got legs and started running well. I also have my nose glued to my NookColor reading "The Enchantment of Flesh and Spirit: The First Book of the Wraeththu Chronicles" which I am absolutely devouring.

We had a relaxing Sunday. I did a bit of editing and reading, played LOTRO with DH for several hours, and we had Subway for dinner (love the price and the food - hard to beat). In fact, I can't think of anything earthshaking that I did at all. I think that's nice for a change :-)

So, I had hopes, slim but hopes nonetheless, that my friend who had tossed me out of her life while I was suffering with my root canal issues would realize that we had been friends for longer than I had been her client, and that we would manage to put all of this behind us.  I wanted to continue our friendship, although I have no intention of having her as my accountant any more.

One of the monitors at the shop has been dying for the past few weeks.  It starts the day out well, but by the end of the day the monitor screen has begun to shrink, making it difficult to turn the system off since it is shrinking the bottom control bar.  So I purchased a monitor yesterday and today (or Friday) I get the dubious joy of installing.  That means that Computer #1 will get a new monitor.  Computer #2 will get the monitor that had been on Computer #1, and the old Computer #2 monitor will have to be recycled.  It wouldn't be bad if there wasn't a crapload of stuff piled in front of the CPU for Computer #1.  My partner just can't seem to avoid piling things onto any horizontal surface.  Computer #2 will be easier to get to, but the cables have to snake through some tight holes.  I'm not sure I'm up for this today.  I probably would rather just be reading "Fall of Kings", the last book in the Swordspoint saga.  Have a wonderful Thursday.

A discussion that started out as a crit on a chapter in a longer tale has morphed into a discussion about reading habits and has led me to thinking about my own.

More below the cut... )
I also have found, that since I got my NookColor, I don't do that any more. I could still do it - each book does have a table of contents and, by utilizing that, I could quite easily flip back and forth. But I don't want to. I want the plot to unfold in the way that the author has crafted. I don't know if this is a function or aftereffect of my own writing efforts, or just a function of the fact that the book is an electronic one, but it is the way that I am currently reading. I will state for the record, however, that there is nothing wrong with knowing the end of the ride. It doesn't change the experience as you get there, and in some cases it actually can augment those experiences. If I didn't love the journey, I would never read and re-read the books that I dearly adore as many times as I continue to do. Why not choose a book that you dearly love to immerse yourself in today? I'll be buried in Kuchner's "Swordspoint" - recommended highly by friends and having hooked me within a chapter.
